Third Generation Kia Picanto
2017 – Present

Announced in 2014, unveiled in 2015 and launched in 2017, the current third generation of Kia Picanto is the best version of this popular car yet! It has improved comfort and convenience features as well as some of the best safety features in its class, which can be seen by its Good Euro NCAP Safety rating.

This version of the Picanto has been seen a lot in the media, including in top automotive shows such as The Grand Tour and Top Gear. Its design stylings are decidedly European, with a dash of sportiness, and it has an aggressive front look that is not normally found in vehicles of this class.

In June 2020, Kia introduced a mid-life facelift, featuring refreshed exterior styling, updated technology, and enhanced safety features, to offer a more complete and value-packed model in the local market. A second life-cycle facelift in 2023 saw the Picanto get additional tweaks, including styling enhancements and a new grading structure. The line-up that consisted of the Start, Street, Style, Smart and X-Line was replaced by the LX, EX and EX Plus variants.

Did You Know? This version of the Kia Picanto was the first Kia to be sold in India, one of the world’s biggest automotive markets. It has been chosen as the flagship Kia model because of its affordability, reliability, ease of running and ability to perform exceptionally well in both crowded cities and on the wide open road.

Second Generation Kia Picanto
2011 – 2017

The second generation of Kia Picanto debuted in 2011 at the Geneva Motor Show and was launched almost immediately afterwards. It was larger and came with more safety features than the previous generation of Picanto, and its design stylings were decidedly European, thanks to the vehicle design team, which was based in Frankfurt and worked under the guidance of esteemed vehicle designer Peter Schreyer.

This version of the Picanto was also a media darling, and even had one of the most memorable small car lines ever written in the UK’s Top Gear Magazine:

“(The Picanto is) a well-made, well-equipped, practical and affordable little thing that’s cheap to run and ought to put the wind up more expensive European cars.”

In fact, this generation of Picanto proved to be so exceptional that it also received one of the highest safety ratings ever for a car in its class from the Australian NCAP test, where it scored a 5-star safety rating!

Did You Know? This generation of Kia Picanto was voted as the Most Reliable Car in the United Kingdom by Moneysupermarket.com, a prestigious price comparison website. Top Gear magazine also named the Picanto “Bargain Car of the Year” in 2011. In South Africa, the Picanto claimed the Standard Bank People’s Wheels Award for “Budget Buys – Affordability First” for three consecutive years, from 2011 to 2013.

First Generation Kia Picanto
2004 – 2011

Introduced to the world in 2004, the First Generation Kia Picanto used the same platform as the Hyundai Getz throughout its entire production run. During its lifetime it underwent 2 facelifts, the first being for the 2007 Picanto and the second taking place during the 2010 Picanto sales year. Only the second facelift included any major visual changes, as in 2010, the “tiger nose” grille that became synonymous with the later model first-generation Picanto hatchbacks was introduced.

Did You Know? After 2010, most Kia Picanto Cars were sold with a CD player and MP3 audio playback, air conditioning, front and rear electric windows, remote central locking, and electric mirrors as standard. This helped to ensure major sales in Europe just as the second-generation Kia Picanto was introduced (see above) later in 2011.
