Used Toyota RAV4 For Sale

If you’re searching for a dependable everyday companion that feels just as confident on urban roads as it does on gravel stretches, the Toyota RAV4 for sale remains one of South Africa’s most trusted choices. Since its local introduction in the 1990s, the RAV4 has stood out for its durability, long-term reliability, practical space, family-friendly comfort, impressive safety record, and excellent resale value. What started as an audacious little SUV built on Camry mechanicals has grown into a global icon, so popular, in fact, that the fifth-generation RAV4 became the world’s best-selling vehicle in 2024 with over 1.1 million units sold. Across all five generations, the RAV4 has consistently offered South Africans a blend of capability, confidence, and everyday usability that makes it a perennial favourite.

Group1 Cars offers quality-checked second-hand RAV4 models, spanning different engines, drivetrains, trims, and year models. Used Toyota RAV4 options remain remarkably popular thanks to their reputation for reliability and strong demand in the pre-owned market. If you’re searching for a versatile SUV that suits family life, adventure, and daily commuting with equal ease, our team is here to help you find a used RAV4 that fits your lifestyle.

Why The Used Toyota RAV4 Remains A South African Favourite

The RAV4 is known for starting the wave of compact crossovers, and it quickly found its footing in South Africa by offering something refreshingly different. It delivered the light, easy-going drive of a car, yet brought the added space, practicality, and raised ride height that families and adventure-seekers wanted. Over the years, it has built a reputation for comfort, reliability over high mileage, good fuel efficiency for its class, and ownership costs that remain manageable. Its popularity spans families, solo travellers, students, retirees, and anyone who wants a no-nonsense, dependable vehicle that handles both city living and open-road journeys.

Given the strong demand for family-friendly vehicles, it’s no surprise that the RAV4 is a key volume model. Since its introduction, the Toyota RAV4 for sale has been offered in multiple trims and configurations. The current lineup, as well as recent model years, has focused on the GX, GX-R, and VX designations, including hybrid options. The concept for RAV4 stands for Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive, although front wheel variants were offered from inception.

Toyota RAV4 Generations In South Africa

The used Toyota RAV4 has evolved significantly over its five generations in South Africa, with each generation bringing notable upgrades and facelifts tailored to the local market’s demands for practicality, performance, and comfort.

Current 5th Generation Toyota RAV4
2018 – Current

The fifth-generation RAV4 made its debut at the March 2018 New York International Auto Show and reached South Africa a year later. Bold, polygonal lines give the RAV4 a more dynamic and expressive presence than ever before. A hybrid model joined the lineup in 2021, followed by E-Four variants in 2022 and the phased rollout of the Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) version based on the GX-R grade that same year.

Built on Toyota’s TNGA-K (GA-K) platform, shared with the XV70 series Camry, this generation features a unibody chassis that is 57% more rigid than its predecessor.

The impressive SUV is powered by fourth-generation hybrid technology and Toyota’s 2.5-litre Dynamic Force hybrid engine, delivering stronger performance and sharper responsiveness, while achieving best-in-class fuel economy and emissions.

No diesel engine option is offered for the 5th-generation RAV4.

4th Generation Toyota RAV4
2012 – 2018

The fourth-generation RAV4 (XA40) represented a complete redesign. Revealed at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November 2012, it reached South Africa in March 2013. For the first time, the RAV4 adopted a conventional rear liftgate instead of a side-hinged door, and the spare wheel moved to under the boot floor. Unlike its predecessor, which offered two wheelbase lengths, this generation was sold only in the longer configuration.

Larger in every dimension, the XA40 introduced a bold new silhouette, upgraded cabin quality, advanced tech features, and improved safety. With generous luggage capacity and competitive pricing, it quickly gained traction, boosting its share of the small SUV segment from 3% to 7%.

A major 2015 facelift brought sharper styling through LED headlamps, a redesigned grille and bumper, slimmer LED-accented tail lamps, and a refreshed rear bumper. This generation also marked a milestone with the debut of the first RAV4 Hybrid AWD, showcased at the New York International Auto Show and signalling the next step in Toyota’s hybrid evolution.

3rd Generation Toyota RAV4
2005 – 2012

The third-generation RAV4 (XA30) arrived in South Africa in March 2006 and introduced both short- and long-wheelbase options. It grew in overall size once again, while its new monocoque body was 76% stiffer and paired with a double-wishbone independent rear suspension for better comfort and stability. This generation also dropped the rear-mounted spare wheel and moved from a full-time all-wheel-drive setup to a more efficient part-time system.

The engine line-up expanded significantly, with a broad mix of petrol and diesel options offered globally. In 2008, the RAV4 received a mid-cycle update for the 2009 model year, which introduced the limited-edition RAV4 Fierce based on the 2.0 GX. A new GX derivative with a 4-speed automatic transmission followed in 2010, helping the third generation remain appealing throughout its lifecycle.

2nd Generation Toyota RAV4
2000 – 2005

The second-generation RAV4, known as the XA20 series, arrived in 2000 with a fully redesigned exterior and a more modern, refined interior. Its sharper front-end styling echoed Toyota’s design direction of the era, while a clean-sheet engineering approach made it longer, wider, and noticeably more spacious. Around 70% of its components were now unique to the RAV4, helping it stand out in a segment that had grown crowded with new car-based SUV rivals.

This generation introduced the AZ-series 2.0-litre all-alloy engine with variable valve timing, producing a healthy 110 kW, along with a 2.0-litre D-4D common-rail turbodiesel, easily recognisable by its bonnet scoop.

A 2004 facelift brought a petrol upgrade to a torquier 120 kW 2.4-litre AZ-series engine, although this particular variant was not offered locally.

1st Generation Toyota RAV4
1995 – 2000

The first-generation Toyota RAV4 launched globally in 1994 and arrived in South Africa in 1995. It debuted as a two-door model, with a four-door version joining the range shortly after. It was an instant hit thanks to its SUV practicality and compact-car efficiency, offering higher seating, extra cargo space, and available full-time four-wheel drive in a vehicle that remained easy to manoeuvre. Built on a Corolla-based platform and using Camry engines and driveline components, with suspension and transmission elements from the Celica GT-Four, it delivered a unique mix of capability, comfort, and agility that set the tone for the generations that followed.

The RAV4 quickly established itself as a local market leader in the small SUV segment with a 53% share.

A mid-life facelift in 1998 added more equipment, improved safety, better refinement, and a slight boost in power. Fresh crystal-style headlights and rear lenses also gave the RAV4 a noticeably more modern look.
