2nd Generation VW Amarok 2022 – Present
The second-generation Amarok was launched on 7 July 2022. Designed collaboratively in Germany and Australia, it is proudly manufactured in South Africa at Ford’s Silverton assembly plant. The tough bakkie represents a significant evolution from its predecessor, boasting enhanced dimensions, cutting-edge tech, improved off-road capability, and a shared platform with the Ford Ranger thanks to the 2019 Ford-VW global alliance cooperation agreement. At 5,350 mm, the second-gen Amarok is 96 mm longer than its predecessor. It is praised for its driving dynamics, which are enhanced by its heavy build and excellent range of options to cater to a wide range of consumer needs. On the safety front, the second-generation Amarok has achieved a five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP, reflecting its robust safety features including automatic emergency braking (AEB), traffic sign recognition, and lane assist across all models. In South Africa, the new Volkswagen Amarok range is available in the following trim lines: Amarok (base model) Life Style Panamericana Top-of the-range Aventura Did You Know? TThe second-generation Volkswagen Amarok has been turning heads and winning awards worldwide! It clinched the International Pick-up Award (IPUA) 2024/2025, its third time sharing the spotlight with the Ford Ranger for outstanding performance and design. In New Zealand, the Amarok Pan Americana was named NZ4WD Ute of the Year 2023. It also earned the title of Best 4×4 and Pick-Up in the Women’s Worldwide Car of the Year awards, celebrated for its rugged utility and family-friendly features.

1st Generation VW Amarok 2010 – 2021
Originally conceived by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles (VWCV) in 2005 to be the Volkswagen that ended the dominance of brands such as Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi and Ford in the pickup truck market, the Amarok took 5 years to develop into one of the BEST utility vehicles ever designed and built by any automotive manufacturer. Ultimately presented to the public in General Pacheco, Argentina, on 7 January 2010 it was an instant media darling that garnered interest from across the globe. However, it was only originally made available for sale in South America, Australia, Mexico, Mongolia, New Zealand and South Africa, with Europe being added as a seventh market a few months later. Since launch there have been numerous VW Amarok trim levels made available, however, currently, the latest Trim levels (including limited edition releases) are: The VW Amarok Comfortline The VW Amarok Highline The VW Amarok Highline PLUS The VW Amarok Dark Label The VW Amarok Extreme As with all Volkswagen vehicles, safety plays a big part in their build. This meant that at launch the Amarok was awarded a 4-star Euro NCAP under the 2010/2011 standard crash testing rules. This was upgraded a year later to 5 stars by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) in 2011. Did You Know? The Amarok is so tough that the Dutch Ministry of Defence has announced it will replace its current Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen with 1,667 new VW Amarok Pickup Trucks! It will also be introduced to both the military and the civilian police forces around the country.

A: In South Africa, the new and used VW Amarok for sale are available in single and double-cab style variants, both of which are combined with either rear-wheel drive or 4-motion four-wheel drive. The previous generation was exclusively available as a double cab here in South Africa.
